I Am Inappropriately Invested: Fics I've Betaed Recently [Apr. 2nd, 2011|04:22 pm]

So I'm thrilled to shrapnel about this: now I can share Lead me to the Truth, the Sherlock fic that lavellington wrote, with you. I have, as the title indicates, a deep and probably inappropriate level of investment in this story since I betaed in-depth for like a week, but I did that because I love it so freaking much. It's packed with gorgeously subtle metaphor and dialogue so spot-on that I was giggling practically any time anyone was talking. I am kind of insanely jealous that this is her fandom debut. If you're part of the fandom, read it. I promise you, you won't regret it.

I'm also kind of behind the times on reccing you the other awesome and gigantic Sherlock fic I did a lot of betaing for, because I have not been updating LJ hardly at all lately. You probably have already read it, because it's been a WIP for a while (it's finished now!) and Ivy Blossom is both an excellent writer and well-known in the fandom, but on the slim chance that you haven't, The Progress of Sherlock Holmes by ivyblossom is a Sherlock POV that really captures, for me, the way his mind works (and that's barely possible, just think of how sharp the man is). Ivy also interweaves her story with the Arthur Conan Doyle canon in intelligent, thoughtful, and creative ways: to find out how, read the story, I don't want to spoil it. Again, you won't regret it.

Because apparently all my posts lately are about fandom (and/or Lady Gaga) [Mar. 20th, 2011|12:26 am]

Tonight I went on a date to see a band that opened their set with a virtuosic violin-led prog-rock cover of Paparazzi.

My Saturday was better than yours.

If you are in a fandom, you should join the IRC chat room linked in this post. Any fandom. You get to meet neat people and waste lots of time and laugh a lot!

[Current Mood |amusedMASSIVELY AMUSED]

On Valentine's Day, a taxi driver asked me for my number, and I gave it to him, because he seemed interesting and was reasonably cute (we both were in local bands).  Today we went on a date and he mentioned his former, non-local, band in passing.  I looked them up on YouTube and found recordings of them on news stations, the Dave Letterman show, and MTV.

Only I could accidentally go on a date with an honest to God former famous rock star.

Lishan is confused. [Feb. 6th, 2011|02:30 am]

[Current Mood |confusedhuh?]

Step 1: be a rockstar in a nerd band
Step 2: have multiple v. attractive women go up to you and tell you things like you're completely beautiful and they had to at least try flirting with you
Step 3: and then have them go away without giving you their numbers or trying to solicit yours?

Not that this is likely but... [Jan. 30th, 2011|12:30 am]

Inspired by ivyblossom and as part of my eliminating unnecessary stuff kick, I'm deleting LJs of people I haven't heard from in approximately forever from my friendslist. If I removed you and you still want to be on my list, by all means let me know and I'll add you back.

All the Yuletide fics and treats I got were awesome. I got a haiku about Feminist Hulk and an interview with Feminist Hulk, both of which should be awesome for obvious reasons.

I also wanted to rec you... well, many Yuletide fics, but especially the third one I got, because it's really obscure and if there's even a vague possibility that someone else besides me will read it and appreciate how awesome it is, I want that person to read it. (People will read the Feminist Hulk ones. I know this. :D)

四十, by someone anonymous I am anxious to meet. 17,082 words of beautifully subverted Chinese myth in the Fireflyverse. Seriously, I was absolutely blown away, and it's my favorite fic I've read in the Yuletide collection this year, and there are a lot of really great ones.

I MANAGED TO NOT DEFAULT ON YULETIDE (a fanfic challenge, for those of you not nerdy enough to already know.)

Managed by like 20 minutes.

Seriously, today I was literally having a sobbing meltdown between work shit and upsetting my brother and not taking any time for myself and just random anxiety shit and finding out my supervisor for the Jewish bellydance class, who I look up to and admire and really relate to, has acute myelogenous leukemia. Writing even a thousand words of passable fluffy cheerful stuff in that mood I consider a hell of an achievement.

Relatedly. Please keep Amy Ariel in your thoughts and/or prayers. She's an amazing human being who has done more to make the world a better place than anyone I know, and I'm just devastated by the idea that she might not be OK.
